WhatsApp can offer upi services to 100 million users

Bengaluru: The National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) has enabled the WhatsApp messaging platform to increase the user’s limit for digital payments through UPI (Unified Payment Interface) to 100 million, two and a half times jumping from the previous boundary of 40 million, people are aware of this problem .

In November last year, NPCI has allowed WhatsApp to pay to double the user’s base from the previous limit of 20 million.

WhatsApp has requested permission for UPI payments for all users in India in one unlimited road. However, NPCI has given a 100 million increase limit, said people.

While NPCI confirmed the development in the statement late at night on Wednesday, a spokesman for whatsapp payments did not immediately respond to the ET question.

The increase in Pay WhatsApp user base is likely to disrupt current market leadership from leading upi applications such as PhoneEPE and Google Pay. It comes when the digital order also makes its debut on UPI and is expected to appear as an important player.

While newcomers are expected to make a dent in the market share of UPI, Industrial Executives say whatsApp has the best chance to shake the market considering a large user base of at least 400 million monthly active users for messaging services.

With the increasing limit, the problem of a market share that is very debated from UPI will be tested.

NPCI has mandated that no one player can process more than 30% of the total volume of Transaction UPI for a period of three months. However, players who are like Phoneepe and Google Pay are given up to the end of 2022 to obey the order.

Walmart and Phonepe CEO belonging to Flipkart Nigam have told ET in September last year that he was not worried about a market share hat. He said that he obeyed all the rules and little he could do to reduce the market share of the platform. “I want to believe that this now user preferences start playing based on the success rate (transaction) and receipt,” he said.
